“center for Individual growth and human advancement”
Arizona Is a state rich with visible history. This history cannot be Ignored, It Is a part of the terrain and topography that make up the region. Respecting history is not a matter of borrowing from or reflecting 'ancient society and 's architecture but reinterpreting the under lying, structure and weaving it Into the new fabric of today’s technology.
This site Is located In Sedona Arizona approximately five miles southwest of the town center. it is next to a river and Is surrounded by beautiful Sedona sandstone hills. It is a perfect site for this kind of project.
The project Is a multi-purpose complex that is to enhance human development. The program description was that of a small community, with a main house (for the client), four guest houses, three artists houses/studios and three small group communication/reflection rooms. There were also to be meditation and viewing platforms which I chose to, project away from the activity of the complex.
The major organizing elements, the crescent and the axis, were derived out of the southwest history, mainly that of the Anasazi culture. The crescent shaped artists complex is a transformation of the Anasazi dwellings found in the cliffs of this region. The organizing axis or spine of the complex can be thought of as a reinterpretation of the Aztec.
